The Federation Of Groundwork Trusts

Groundwork has a 40-year history of supporting practical action to create a fair and green future in which people, places and nature thrive. We are a charity and limited company and operate through a network of 15 local ‘trusts’ with offices across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, supported by a national office, Groundwork UK, based in Birmingham.
We have a long history of successfully working alongside local communities and public, private and charitable partners to help create high-quality public spaces accessible to all. Our work ranges from small community gardens and pocket parks, strategic gateway and business park landscaping programmes, to major public realm schemes in urban areas. It includes projects within healthcare settings such as hospitals, hospices and residential care homes such as Corby Hospital, John Scott Health Centre and many others. Our clients include Network Rail, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, HS2, NHS Property Services, Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

This work is led by dedicated team of Chartered and Senior Landscape Architects and other landscape practitioners who share the latest professional theories and best practice. Coming from a wide range of backgrounds including construction, design, horticulture, ecology, architecture and planning, they bring detailed knowledge and insight into how public spaces are used within neighbourhoods and the pros and cons of different types of design, planting, and materials in community settings. All staff are Chartered Members of the Landscape Institute, and Groundwork is a Landscape Institute Registered Practice.

We offer a full inception to completion design service supported by a national framework of expertise and precedent. We specialise in community-led design; focusing on collaboration and facilitating co-design and implementation processes to help develop high quality sustainable locally relevant landscapes that meet community need, engender community ownership and pride and stand the test of time. This work is supported by our experienced youth and community engagement teams, skilled in participatory consultation processes.

We have a diverse range of expertise to meet customer needs. Services range from conceptual design to detailed construction stages, project management on-site, Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments (LVIAs), planning permission submissions, surveys and searches, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) schemes. We can also deliver: feasibility studies, masterplanning, cost estimating and funding advice, landscape maintenance strategies, photomontage, GIS and digital imagery, best value tendering and the development of partnerships and funding applications. We also have experience of commissioning public art, play space design, flood alleviation, community woodlands, habitat management and heritage landscapes. We have also been at the forefront of creating climate-resilient public open spaces, using Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) that reduce surface water flooding, and other landscape solutions that help cool urban areas and reduce pollution.

We help our clients maximise public benefit and social value from any landscape improvement, using these as a way to promote health and wellbeing, provide training and work experience, support economic development and tackle environmental sustainability. For example, our landscaping teams often provide work experience for young and unemployed people with opportunities for them to engage in greenspace improvements.
